Fdisk is a DOS program, it can't format to NTFS. Use an XP, Vista, Windows 7or 8 disc to format it to NTFS or put it in a working computer as a secondary drive and format it through Explorer.

Why do people insist on using tools that were designed at a time when a 100 MGb disk was huge.

All the tools you need to partition and format a hard disk are on the Windows XP installation disk.

When you get around to setting it up properly be sure to delete the fat16 partition. A fat16 partition can't be larger than 2 gig so on a large drive you might not notice it's there but it will be occupying the first 2 gig of the drive.
