I assume this is a hard drive problem but am not sure.

I started up my computer and i started to hear a noise that sounds like the hard drive spinning up then shutting down repeatedly (but it did boot up windows and let me open programs, even with that sound). After about a minute of that, it restarted itself, and repeated the noise and restarting a few more times. Then it booted into chkdsk, and fixed a few errors. And when it started back up it seemed to be fine, except AVG and a few other programs would not load up anymore because of "missing files".

I was wondering if this would be a definite hard drive failure or maybe a power supply problem?

Oh and i did check the IDE and power cables.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Unlikely a powersupply problem would cause files to go missing.

Download a harddrive diagnostic tool from the HDD manufacturer and run a drive fitness test from bootable floppy or CD.

That will tell you if you have a hard drive problem or should look deeper.

You should also back up all of your files, and do an image of the C drive if you have the software.

i would also check all cables are plugged in properly just in case its due to a poor connection, but it does sound to me like its probably hard drive failure.

Sounds like a HDD failure. Back up ur data first. And then run disk check up.
