Comment: OK my laptop froze one time so i held the power button until it shut off. The next time i turned it on, the computer froze before loading XP. I then decided to use the recovery cd to reinstall windows, but it would stop and give me the following error: Abort 29005 Write sector failure Result = 1 drive = 128 Sectors 6311679 to 6311743 And also there were lots of odd "beep" noises while the recovery tool was running. Anyway, i think what has happened is that the hard drive has failed, but I'm not sure. It can't be anything else, can it? Is there any way I can fix this myself, like buying a laptop hard drive and installing it, or is my computer dead forever? I think I'm like a month past my warranty so I dont think Toshiba will do anything about it. Thanks for any suggestions

Reply: (edit)"i think what has happened is that the hard drive has failed, but I'm not sure. It can't be anything else, can it?" It could be. You could buy a replacement hard drive but replacing it might be difficult ... most laptops are hard to work on. And then, maybe that's not the problem.

Reply: (edit)Ok i ran several tests and it is definitely a hard drive problem. I took out the hard drive and it's actually pretty easy to take out/install. The only problem is making sure i buy the right one... The drive i have uses an ATA-6 interface (toshiba mk8026GAX) does this mean i can purchase the Toshiba MK4032GAX which uses the Parallel ATA-100 IDE (Ultra DMA/100) interface?

Reply: (edit)Hi, I would certainly try a new/good drive. Maybe you could borrow one to test with. You can get the needed Drivers from Toshiba to load after you are up and running in WinDoze. Good Luck, Jim
