My 120GB Maxtor crashed!

Opened the drive up and saw extensive damage to the platter. Most of the damage is on the inside of the disk.

Besides sending it in to a professional, what are my options? If possible, I'd like to fix this myself.

I need to find out what's defective. Is it the head? The electronic control board?

Too late. If it was under warantee you should have sent it in. You have contaminated the drive. Unless there was extremely important data, it is not worth any attempt at recovery. You can't just replace parts. You need a clean room and a servo writer to do the repair.

Totally knackered, they need to be opened in a sterile environment!

The tolerances in a hard drives are so small that even a particle of cigarette smoke can cause a head crash and destory the drive. They must only be opened up in a clean room, as mentioned above.

Hi,

The drive is toast. You cannot open up a hard disk, except in the described environment.

It is unlikely that even a professional recovery would be able to recover any data from the drive.

Sealed, posibly. Opened to atmosphere, probably impossible.

I hope you had your data backed up.

And what exactly were you going to do when you opened it, besides void warranty if still covered. Shine the discs with a sander? LOL

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

You'd better send your drive to data recovery company.

Beacuse the data recovery is very exact work!!
