Hard Drive Crash or other issue ?

Specs: Windows Vista , AMD RM-72/ 3GB
Have a Toshiba Satellite approximately 3 years old. At random times hard drive will just quit giving me a black screen. No blinking cursor, no blue screens. Hard drive LCD light doesn't blink or show any activity. CPU fan keeps running. If I shut it down and power up the unit it may work fine for days or weeks. Am I looking at a hard drive issue or motherboard?

I would lean towards a video card problem which could be a chipset on the motherboard. Boot to VGA mode. See if it happens again.

"At random times hard drive will just quit giving me a black screen"

On what basis did you determine the fault is with the hard drive? It is more likely you have an overheating issue or as suggested above a graphics fault. Have you checked system temperatures? Have you blown the dust out of the cooling vents?

Thanks for the reply.
From my research it appears that video problems will show two things, a blank screen with a cursor blinking or even ghost images on the screen. Also many report the screen going black while playing video games and/or videos. I do neither. I have none of these symptoms. As to overheating. I have not checked the temps, however, I run a dual fan cooling plate at all times and immediately after it shuts down I can restart it and it my run for days or weeks. If it would overheat I wouldn't think it could be restarted immediately with no further problem. It restarts normally with no options for check disk , safe mode or any indication that a sudden shut down occurred. Thanks for the help though. I really appreciate it.
