Hi all,

Does anyone know of a good program that allows you to selectively power down hard drives after a set amount of time?

I basically just want to keep my OS drive always on, but turn off the drive I use for backup after 5 minutes.

Thanks!

Just wondered it this would do what you want:

EDIT:
Oops, too hasty, I don't think it can be applied to an external.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

What I do is use a taskbar shortcut to Device Manager then manually Enable/Disable the drive as required. This is so that CryptoLocker wouldn't be able to find it. On the face of it this approach sounds like torture but with practice I can do it in seconds. I back up everything on an "as you go" basis and it still works out quite well.

Thanks, I suppose that is easier than physically unplugging/plugging in the drive when I want to use it (which is what I currently do).

I'm not going to set this thread to 'Solved' quite yet just to see if I can get any more suggestions.

Oh no, keep it open and lets have some other ideas.

Yes, I do find the suggested ritual easier than physically unplugging and re-plugging, which could cause undue wear and tear too. At first it was a bit tedious but I quickly got up to speed.

As you say, we'll keep watching.

I'll throw this in for good measure:

Sorry, I know nothing about it - just stumbled across it. READ THE WARNING NOTE.
