Comment: For several days now I've noticed my primary hard drive is constantly running. I don't know how to describe the sound, kinda scratching, like something being written or copied. Even when I'm not doing anything. My virus scanner doesn't pick anything up, so I don't believe something naughty is happening. Anything I can check? Thanks

Reply: (edit)Hard drive diagnostics from the manufacturer's website? Check running proceses in task manager? Check for spyware/adware/virus/trojans? Just a few thoughts.

Reply: (edit)Just for future reference, hard drives do run constantly. The disk spins up a boot and stays spinning all the time the computer is running. It doesn't stop and start like a floppy or CD does. The only time it will stop is if the computer goes into standby and not always then. Having said that, any unusual noises could be a sign if impending disaster. Run the diagnostic as suggested by GXI Man and make sure you have backups of any important data. Stuart
