I'm looking for some advise on cleaning up my hard drive so that I can use it for music production.

At present I have quite a few programs installed but want to remove most of them and only have a couple that i'll be using.

As far as I can see my hard drive is partioned as follows:

1. ?: EISA Configuration

2. ACER C: System, Boot, Page file, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partion

3. DATA D: Primary Partion

My Opperating System is Vista Home Basic and this is installed on the C: Partion.

I've never cleaned up a hard drive before so i'm guessing that I delete everything somehow but my Opperating System was already installed when I purchased my PC so I don't have an installation disc for it to re install it.

If anyone has any advise or recommendations that would be great.

If I need to add any more infor then please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I would contact Acer tech help and they should tell you how to restore the laptop to origional since you don't have an installation disc (I'm sure there's a way of making a startup disc for vista).
Try that first.

If you just want to remove programs, go to the Control Panel 'Add or Remove programs' and have fun. Make a note of every program you uninstall and after you are done go to 'c:\program files', find the folders of the programs that you uninstalled and delete them. The uninstall usually does not delete everything.
When you are satisfied that everything is still working ok, click on the Recycle BIn and empty it out.

If you do as response 2 stated, you may also want to use regcleaner:

and remove all remnants of the programs you uninstall.

The way that I told you was the quickest way to do a factory restore, but you can also do the latter.

Also be sure your criticals are all up-todate as well as your AV and firewall.
Good luck

Different strokes for different folks, but I don't believe in using Registry cleaners. The amount of space freed is practically nil, and there is a chance (maybe kinda small) that it could cause a problem. Programmers who write Registry Cleaning programs make mistakes like everyone else.

no problem, but why leave remnants on a PC? I like a clean PC myself....removing things with regcleaner (which is really user friendly) makes for a much smoother operation IMHO

It is also reverseable.

I am of the opinion that cleaning up the Registry makes no noticeable difference, but I can't prove it. ;-)

You don't have to prove it. Mark Russinovich (M$ Tech Fellow) already did. Read...

Registry Junk: A Windows Fact of Life

Speaking of Acer unique HD architecture, I never understood the difference between System Partition (drive C) and Primary Partition (drive D) other than EISA partition.

For the EISA partition it stores Windows Installation files modified to Acer customization. This is a common practice used by all other major system builders for system restoration operations.

For drives C & D both has Windows folders and it is only with Acer computers. I could never figure out which partition is ideal for installing programs as well as saving user's data files.

Perhaps someone very knowledgable with Acer systems can enlight me the reasons and whyfores of Acer's unique hard drive architecture.

In the case I agree with aegis for only 1 reason "I don't have an installation disc for it to re install it". Don't do anything until you get another copy of you cds and, get them now while they are still available. When you get them make copies and store them somewhere.
This is a machine that had vista when you bought it? Can't be that old. How could you have lost them already?

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I could just manually remove everything via the control panel but I really wanted to completely clean the hard drive.

larryf215: I haven't lost the installation cds. My PC is only approx. 1 year old and it came with vista installed on it and didn't have any installation cds.

I'm not sure.

As I said, I didn't get any installation discs with the desktop.

I made a back up of the PC when I first got it if that sheds anymore light on the subject.
