Hard drive appears ampty but is not

My Maxtor HD is recognized by my computer and properties say the files are there but when I open Drive "D" (which is the drive assigned to the secondary drive) all the files are gone or at least there are NO icons. How can I get access to all my files. Thanks in advance for your help
