I currently have a 40gig hd (IBM Deskstar 7200rpm ATA/100) and plan on getting a 80gig hd SATA, does this matter when I install new hd. I plan that the new hd will be a slave. Is there any special things I need to do. I want to keep everything on my old hd intact. For right now I do not know what brand of hd I will be getting. Any help would be great. Thanks

Your motherboard needs to support SATA drives or you will need an add in controller. There will be no advantage to the SATA drive as a slave. SATA drives run slightly faster than ATA but that doesn't matter for your use. I suggest you buy a regular ATA drive and save a little cash.

OtheHill is correct. SATA is at it's best as a system drive. You can save some money by putting in a second IDE drive.

Thanks for the info. So if I get a ATA is there anything else I should do after I format the drive.
