Subject: Hard drive access?
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: Turion 1.6X2
Model/Manufacturer: Aspire 5110
Comment:

My hard drive 'chirps' every minute or so when playing WoW, the LED blinks, and my screen freezes for a half second. I'm at my wits end with this. I've restored the drive, reinstalled all the drivers, and WoW and the chirping continues.

I'm hoping someone can recommend software that monitors hard drive activity the same way task manager does for the CPU? This way I can see exactly what "process" or application is accessing the hard drive. I've spent an hour searching and can only find a LED replacement monitor or the Diskmon utility from Microsoft.

Or if someone has insight to this predicament I'd be much appreciative!

Unfortunately there is no such software that can monitors hard drive activity the same way task manager does for the CPU. However in 2001 a consortium of companies launched SPCR (short for Silent PC Review) to provide in-depth articles related to silent computing. In 2005, SPCR created a system of hard drive noise assessment using sophisticated acoustic test instruments & equipment. The chirping sound you hear every once in a while is the noise of HD head reset.

Below is SPCR HD testing methodology. The chirping sound is duly noted on page 2.

You might use performance monitor to view stats.

Also disable the caching in the device properties. It might be causing this.

See also event log.

Use system diag suite or hard drive diags.

Enable smart.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Thank you both!

@XpUser - That was quite an informative article and helps temendously

@jefro - will have to try disabling caching to see if that helps. Had no idea that was selectable. Have tried diag utilities but those really didn't help me narrow anything down
