Subject: Hard disk wont spin with IDE cable OS: Windows XP CPU/Ram: Athlonxp2000/512ddr
|
Comment: fans start, even Powersupply. but the HDD doesn't spin at all. I tried it without the IDE cable and i can hear it spin but when i plug the IDE back in it doesnt spin and my moniter just shows a blank screen. Im sure my CPU, and video card are fine because it gets warm. That hard disk is only a few months old and I had this problem before. I just dont want to send for another new one if i dont need it. Help please!

Reply: (edit)Hi, The hard disk needs two cables. The flat IDE ribbon cable ( signal / data )and a power connector. Normally four ports, sized about 22mm * 6mm This will normally only go in one way, due to an angled corner. Alternatively there may be a minature power connector, which slides on only one way. In both cases the red cable is closest to the ribbon. hth Ceri

Reply: (edit)Angrymen, it does have to do with the post. He was suggesting checking the cable if they were plugged into right position since some IDE cable can be pluged in two ways (has no pumper). However, he didn't say it straighly out so it can be comfusing. If both power cable and IDE cable are at thier right place, then the red cable on the power cable and the red side of the IDE cable should be side by side with each other. If your cable have two ..um.."heads", then try switching to other see if they work. otherwise, try a different IDE slot on motherboard.

Reply: (edit)Yes, it was a good post by ceri sheeran. A couple of other things. If the flat cable is inserted upside down, it can kill the system and cause a blank screen. Also if the power cable is left out, like ceri suggested, it can kill the system.

Reply: (edit)Sorry, I guess I either misunderstood ceri or jinntonic. After re-reading I owe ceri an apology and hope an acceptance of it. You guys are right, I just jumped to an all to hasty conclusion. When all else fails, beat the %*#$! out of it!!!

Reply: (edit)Uhh, i use round IDE cables and i tried both of them. Once i boot up the system, i still get a blank screen and when i pull it out i can hear the disk spin. Possibly a hard drive defect ='( but it still spins! and it was only 5 months old. Not a cable problem!

Reply: (edit)take the hard drive out and make sure that you didn't bend a pin over... where your round plug goes in.. if not then just make sure that you plug in the right direction.. other than that... hmmm... Reply: (edit)Hi Hmmmm things to try/test:: Another going power supply unit. Or try another hard drive or two to load the system down and see if the machine will boot. ary: you must have struck a very poorly designed computer. I would think that most technical designers/engineers would have ensured that "no such killing" of motherboards would occur due to a bad power connection on the hard drive.

Reply: (edit)The power supply works. And its not new. I built it over a year ago and it works fine, at least for a few months at a time. Its impossible to plug in the power connectors in the wrong way because of the angle notch on the top. o well Ill ask the manufactuer then. -_- Athlon XP 2000+ 256mb DDRx2 (2100/2700) 80GB western digital geforce4 Ti4200 w/64mb audigy LS clear window/blue cathode pretty darn quiet PC!

Reply: (edit)Hi Can I read that as, you tested with a different PSU or loaded up that PSU then. A year old power supply means nothing if that PSU is playing up. It sounds like a hard drive problem, but it pays to test, just to be sure.
