Hard disk un bootable

Toshiba sateliite / R25

Specs: Windows XP
I am not able to boot through hard disk. Initially i thought the hard disk is broken. But i could read the hard disk through an external hard disk enclosure.
Now that i believe the problem is not with the hard disk, where should i start looking next?
The sequence of events is when i start the laptop, it does a bios check, check for bootable cd and then hangs the moment it reaches Hard drive as a bootable device. I tried to repair the windows installation. The installation files were copied during the install but again it hangs the moment it tries to reach the hard disk for actual installation.
Any suggestions is appreciated

Boot to some other media such as cd or usb flash and then copy all the data off you can.

Then I'd start with some diag tests. Ultimate boot cd or other diag disk may be a good start. Start with memtest for a day or so. Then move on to the hard drive tests. Best to use the OEM tests for the hard drive. If you have a Maxtor then use their diags.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
