hard disk clicking, won't boot up

I have a dell inspiron 8100. I have had it just over 4 years. And it has been a very good lap top. But today I was using it and and running some programs, when it froze up. The hard disk starting clicking.

After about 10 seconds the clicking stopped, and l was able to use my computer. 5 minutes later it froze and then shut down. I restarted but it won't fully start up. It keeps on clicking for about 10 seconds on and off. And only boots to the login screen. I tried in safe mode, but no good. I thought if l could get it to boot up, I could do a scandisk.

I am a student and need my lap top for my studies. Is there way to solve this and get my data.

Since it's clicking, it is probably beyond any software help. Sorry to say it.

I would quit trying to boot it if you hope to save data from the drive.


If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

sounds like your drive is dead. You can probably save the data but, you will need to get another HD most likely.

If you are running on the battery, 'try' it on AC power. But I agree that it's 'probably' a dead hard drive.
