YES! I've finally proved (at least for my purposes) that Computergate.com is officially cheaper than newegg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mobo died the other day (so at the moment I'm running a PII 300), so I decided to do a little research and I'm going to build a new machine and swith to the AMD platform (well, a mostly new machine -- I'm keeping my hard drive and monitor!). So, I checked out Computergate, Newegg, and Tigerdirect. The configuration was as follows (not intended to be a HIGH performance machine, just a good performing system for some basic graphic work and mild gaming):
AMD 64 3000+/2000 fsb/Socket 939
Beastly Socket 939 cooler
S939 mobo with 16x pci express, 4 400mhz ddr
Mid tower case with LED's and clear side panel
16x DVD burner
2 3 LED ball bearing case fans
2 memory heatsinks
1X512mb big name DDR3200 (Kingston, PNY, Crucial, etc.)
1X256mb big name DDR3200
Hard Disk Cooler
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 value
256mb ATI X600 chipset PCI express video cardNow, from worst to best pricing, TigerDirect came ou to $582.86, New Egg came to $549.43, AND THE WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... COMPUTERGATE!!!!!!!!!!!!! at $539.40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, so there, Newegg, you're not the cheapest like they all think!
Ok, now I've ranted and raved, and I'm quite finished!

Can't say I've purchased a single thing from Newegg. They aren't the cheapest.......especially when you add in shipping costs, which zipzoomfly has them by the neck on. Oh, did I mention I buy everything from zipzoomfly?

I've never had a bad experience buying from Newegg.
Check out Fry's Outpost. I like them better than Newegg.

Saving $10 on a $500 computer isn't much to brag about ;).
Asus P4P800
P4 2.4c @ 3000 Mhz Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu HSF
ATI Radeon 9800 pro
1 GB OCZ pc 3500 ram
Sound Blaster audigy LS

"Saving $10 on a $500 computer isn't much to brag about ;)."
True, but I hear so much about Newegg being the almighty, cheapest, one stop shop for PC components, and it's just great to see an lesser-known underdog beat them! TCWO used to be great, but they seem to be out of business now.
"Check out Fry's Outpost"
I'll do that.

Amazon.com is Amazing. I always get free shipping.
I also use Zipzoomfly they are good
These two are all that anyone needs.

Computergate doesn't have as big a product lineup as newegg. Didn't have the case or RAM I'm buying from newegg. The Abit An8 I'm getting is $130 at Compgate and $102 at newegg.
So far I'm seeing no reason why I should switch to getting things from there.
Same mobo is cheaper at newegg than zipzoomfly even with shipping costs. Zipzoomfly didn't have case or RAM either...
Newegg also has an easier interface and the search engine is made very well.
I'll stick with newegg.Build-in-Progress:
NZXT Nemesis Elite
Athlon 64 3200
Abit An8
OCZ EL PE Rev2 DDR400
X800PRO flash to 800XT PE
A-TOP ATX12V 500W PSU

And don't forget, often times Newegg has free or reduced shipping, too. That with the great customer service get's my business everytime. But I do shop around. +

I have used Zip Zoom Fly and never found them to have the selection Newegg does, and never cheaper on anything. Also Newegg has a facility in NJ now so those of us in the east get the fastest delivery from them.
Newgg is never the cheapest, but they are fast, have quality, and are in the ballpark for most items.

I buy from Newegg, ZipZoomFly, & Outpost...mostly from Newegg. Sorry, but I won't even consider TigerDirect. They may have gotten better, but they used to have a horrible rep & I refuse to buy from them.
Now as for this system you're building...you could do better. Seems to me a few things are outta whack.
- you aren't specific about your board, but you should be getting one based on the nForce4 Ultra chipset
- get the A64 3200+ Venice (retail) & use the stock HSF. The A64 runs fairly cool...you don't need to waste your money on a "Beastly Socket 939 cooler"
- if the mid tower case come with a PSU, chances are, it's gonna be a crappy no name one. You're gonna have to add a decent PSU to your parts list
- memory heatsinks are unnecessary & a waste of money
- you should be getting 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 CL 2.5. You're not gonna be able to run in dual channel mode with 512MB + 256MB
- HDD cooler is unnecessary
- the onboard sound on most cards is quite good these days. You could do without the Soundblaster, but I'll give ya that one
- the X600 (Pro?) is OK, but not great. 256MB is totally unnecessary. The X600Pro 128MB beats the 256MB version in most tests I've seen. There are better cards in the same price range that'll spank em both.
It doesn't matter to me where you buy from, but your configuration needs reconfiguring...lol

YOu won't go far with it.

I am running close to the same system and I love it. I am using the stock CPU heat sink and my idle temp is 30c! It runs very cool. I bought a nice case by Cooler Master from mwave.com and it came with 2 fans. One fan blows past the hard drives and does a great job of cooling them. I also agree about using dual channel ram. Preferably Kingston. Good luck

Every single time I am forced to order somthing from Newegg it gets screwed up somehow.
The last time was a specific product a customer wanted that only they had. Ordered one..received and was billed for two. They took it back no problem but sheesh.
Just one of those things I guess but I don't really have anything good to say about them.
Jimi_l

Not only has Newegg never screwed up in over 175 orders, but one time I had a problem with a defective motherboard and they not only resolved immediately, but they thanked me for being such a great customer that they had not noticed how many orders I had placed with them, and sent me a whole box full of free useful items along with a thank you note for being there so often.

Amazon.com has PDF manuals for products and great rewiews on products. + tons of other advanages.

Newegg customer service is one of the intangible factors
recently bought a cordless phone from them and it was advertised as a speakerphone which it was not. Called Newegg who said literature was from the manufacturer (GE) and they would check and call back (sure I thought) less than 1 hour later the Newegg rep call and said the phone was not a speakerphone they would credit my account for the cost of phone and shipping (which they did the same day and
told me to keep the phone
That is customer service you can not beat

on a side note, i agree with jam on the configuration needing reconfiguring, and kingston is the best RAM. on the main point, if you want bang for your buck EBAY is best, if you have the patience for being outbid and overbid most of the time. i personally am a big EBAYer and in over 70 items purchased, mainly computer parts, only have four of them been defective or unusable, and i was able to return and get my money back on three of the four items. most EBAY dealers are reputable, and if you check their feedback before bidding, and generally steer clear of anything sold "as-is" you can find some killer bargains. 1gb PC3200 RAM stick for $80!!! BUY-IT-NOW! just an example of how if you have some patience EBAY can be an excellent tool. by the way, Newegg is unreliable. i have tried six differant orders and newegg managed to screw all of 'em up.
Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.

Everyone can have a bad day, I guess. I have only ordered from Newegg about a dozen times, all highly satisfactory. I praised their service and they sent me a box of free stuff, too. I believe in reporting good service, just as I raise cane about bad service. TigerDirect puts out a nice catalog, or they used to. (?) But it always seemed to me their prices were high.
As Dragon306 says, check out ebay. I have bought lots of really good stuff, cheap, there. Occasionally I get a dud, but mostly people are willing to work with you. On memory, go to Crucial to find the best memory for your system and then look for it on ebay. I did. Watch those shipping and handling charges, tho. Some of them will charge you $20 to ship a CD-ROM!

Jam -- thanks for the reality check on the config. I haven't built a NEW computer for several years. I'm stuck in the past, with hot running, slow machines! I really feel out of the loop. I haven't read a decent computer article in a year!
I'm a network/systems admin for a small private school, and 90% of the PCs are Pentium IIIs, so that's the technology I'm stuck on these days! Of course, we did just do an upgrade for the school administrators. Pentium 4 for one, Athlon XP for one, AMD 64 for another, but those were preconfigured systems used for nothing special!
Okay, it's time I read up on a little bit of new computer stuff. Eventually, the school is going to need to upgrade, and I'm going to have to be well versed on the newer technology.
As for the little ten buck difference, again, just poking fun because I've heard so much about new egg. I was never fond of their interface, by the way. It seems to be slow-loading. I'm on a 4mbit/s connection, so my end isn't the issue. As far as Computergate's product selection, sure, it's not the greatest, but they've always had everything I need, their shipping is fast, and communication is great.
By the way, Jam, you mentioned "$10 = pizza & 2 liter coke." I can get a large pizza, a 2 liter coke, and an order of breadsticks for $10. I suppose it's not that big of a deal, but it was fun anyway!
~Patrick

$10 might get you some bread and tomato puree over here. No hope of a pizza tho lol.

Since I hadn't been on Newegg for awhile and since I am now on a DSL line (slow, I didn't get the faster one) I decided to try their site out. It took maybe 10 seconds to load up. I notice they have a new interface, and I don't think it is as easy to understand as the old one. But when I clicked on Computer Hardware it took me there as fast as before. Speed doesn't seem to be much of an issue there. I like their broad spectrum of products. They don't just have one or two DVD burners, they have dozens! All prices. And I saw most have FedEx Shipping at $4.00. Can't beat that.
Bob

I go with the company that has the best customer service. I'd much rather have piece of mind that I wont have a problem returning something than save 1/50th of my purchase. New egg has always been great, alot of the items I have bought had free shipping, and I always receive the package in 3days. I've ordered maybe 15 times from newegg with no problems. The only other place I buy stuff is tigerdirect, but they have a local outlet about 10min from me, so I only use them for something I need the same day.
Corsair xms rocks btw.
last 6month Reseller ratings:
newegg---------9.61
zipzoomfly-----8.65
Tiger Direct---7.20
Computergate---6.67
Fry's outpost--5.12
Amazon---------3.76Personally I would never think of ordering anything online from a company with a rating of under 7.0. Asking for problems.
Newegg has a 6month rating of 9.61, and a lifetime rating of 9.67. I'll gladly pay an extra $1 for ever $50 to do business with newegg.
