dont quite know what the problem is here, but i turned on my computer and it started making this buzzing, grinding noise. Took off the case and looked for obstructing wires and unplugged everything down to the PSU and motherboard. It still makes the noise. Im guessing its the PSU making the sound. Ive been afraid to let the computer start up not knowing what this cause really is. Any ideas?

Bad bearing in PSU fan. Can replace the fan (sometimes) or lube the fan (sometimes) but the best thing to do is replace the PSU.

I recently ingnored this noise until the fan quit and it did not injure the computer or the PSU ... but it was a 180 W PSU on an AMD K6 II 400MHz system. I was able replace the fan and got it running again without replacing the PSU. It was a great "hobby" experience on a computer that wasn't really very important to me.

Dies the noise go awaay after a minute or so or does it remain?

Mine used to make a noise similar to your description but once warmed up it went away.

It started doing it about six months after I got the PC and it made the noise for four years before I replaced the PSU because I got tired of hearing it.

It did not make the noise in the summer or when the room temperature was above 70F.

I too have the same problem with a Cyrix M II 250MHz Compaq system. It quit for doing it for about 4 months, then it started again, tonight in fact.
