grinding noise from hard drive area

Specs: Windows vista
When the device status light turns on and reads or writes data there is a grinding sound everytime/ all the time.
Also I cannot access the computer window to veiw my memory or plugged in devices.
VERY SLOW statup after windows logo then black screen for 10 - 15 minutes to access users accounts. Goes in slow too.
recently antivirus ran out and got norton which is running slow and never complets a full check.
HELP???
Know whats causing this?

If you have any personal files on that drive you had better copy them to somewhere else fast. Your drive sounds like it is dying.

Any unusual noises from the hard drive are a warning sign that the drive is failing. Backup any important data on that drive without delay. Your window of opportunity to recover your data may be very short.
