graphix driver problem

Specs: Vista
I have a big problem with my screen.
its shows just in 4bit 640*480. Hawever when turn off my pc, let i cool for few hours its sometimes displays 800*640 rezolution 32bit. If i try to change the resolution or bit rate in display settings it goes back to 640*480 4bit.
It all started when i lounched my windows update and it updated my driver. After that i played a game. While playing the game my pc crashed with a starge sound multiple times (someting like an error message at the rate of 3times/sec). I restarted my pc and here i have the crappy 600*480 4bit resolution. It doesnt let me change it. And device manager shows that theres a problem with my graphix driver GeForce 8400M G (error 43). Also in System/Performence its shows the rating for my graphix card and for my graphix 3D gaming stuff 1 point. It used to show 3.2. Also theres a black stripe about an inch on the right of my screen. After the stripe i can see a duplicate of a bit of my left side screen [ |]. I restored my system and everything was normal again. But when i trayed to lounch the game again it crashed in the same way with the same simptoms. Now i cant repair it. But since i managet to do it once i think its not the hardware. Btw i trayed uninstalling and installing the correct drivers but no use.

I am growing bold here T_T HELP ME

Have you tried 'rolling back' the driver in Device Manager?

In the future, get your video drivers from nvidia, not from Windows Update. Try installing this:
