I have a graphics tablet conflict that i cant solve. Any ideas or am i going to be stuck with it?

The situaition is that i have an old WAcom A3 graphics tablet (digitizer II, model: UD-1218)that has a serial port connection. My new dell dimension 3100 only has USB ports. So i purchased a USB to serial converter (semtech chipset) and installed it. Then installed the graphics tablet drivers. Everything appeared to be fine at first. During a long session using the tablet things started to go a bit crazy. The mousepointer started to jump about and click everyso often . Then the mousepointer would periodically fail to respond too one of the input devices but work with another. Everything worked ok when graphocs tablet was switched off. So it appeared to be a conflict between the graphics tablet and the USB mouse to me.

I have loked in the device manager and there are no conflicts listed.

I have uninstalled the usb mouse from the system & rebooted the machine without the mouse & with the USB keyboard & graphics tablet plugged in. Mouse pointer still jumping about & clicking.

I have tried a number of com ports & drivers for the graphics tablet. But to no avail. There does not appear to be anyway of changing the IRQ or I/O address of the USB to serial converter as the resources tab is not displayed for this device in properties.

There is no setting in the BIOS of the machine that is of any use to this situaition.

I have heard that sometimes a mouse & graphics card can conflict. However although i can imagine that this would cause the mouse to jump about - i dont think that it would cause false button presses from the mouse.

I have done a virus scan with sophos but nothing picked up.

I am now stuck. i have a new machine that i wont use because i cant use the graphics tablet with it!

Any ideas? (other than change the kit im using)

Hi, Not sure, but did you set the BIOS Setup to PLUG and PRAY OS? If so Windoze should take care of the IRQs. Of course you should also be showing a conflict. Luck, Jim

Hi Jim.

There is no option to set Plug & Play in the BIOS. The dell bios is very limited in what it lets the user configure.

I agree - i should be able to see a conflict listed in device manager. But there is no indication of any conflicts listed here.
