the mointor goes blank and the green light on it turns orange when windows starts. We have tried safe mode and it gets a lil further and can even get into device manager sometimes but other it gets to the start menu you click on run and then the screen goes blank again. is it a graphics problem or hardware fualt

Disable all startup items via MSCONFIG (if you can) and remove your video driver all from safemode, then turn off and restart the computer.

If that fails you need to run an install repair of XP.

That's notmally an indication of a driver problem. However, the standard driver is used in safe mode, and should not cause any problems.

I would try another video card, if you have one.
