Ok I have read loads of other messages on this site some of them have helped but I would prefer to put my own question out there and get answer in one place rather than having to look at loads of old posts.

Ok here it is I have a Radeon 9200 ATi 64MB AGP graphics card and I’m wanting to upgrade reason so I can play some of the new high specs games (e.g. Call of Duty 4, Supreme Commander) and improve the performance of some of my old games. But I don’t know exactly what to look for so could someone please help me. I have used a program called Everest Home Edition to find out the exact specs of the card and my PC. Here is what Everest says my graphics card specs are:

Display/GPU/Graphics Processor Properties section:
Bus Type AGP 4x
Memory 64MB
GPU Clock 250 MHz (original: 250 MHz)
RAMDAC Clock 400 MHz

Display/GPU/Memory Bus Properties section:
Bus Type DDR
Bus Width 64-bit
Real Clock 200 MHz (DDR) (original: 250 MHz)
Effective Clock 400 MHz
Bandwidth 3200 MB/s

Motherboard/Chipset/AGP Controller section:
Supported AGP Speeds 1x, 2x, 4x

I have also looked on a website called TheTechGuys.com and on there it gives the specs for my PC, in one of the sections it says this; AGP Slot (1.5V_AGP1) 1 x AGP slot for 1.5V 8X/4X AGP card. Can’t remember where I seen this bit Clock Speed 200 MHz Memory Speed 333 MHz. No where on Everest does it show Memory Speed 333 MHz. And in case it helps my Motherboard is TriGem IM845G (Imperial – G) Rev. G Version 2.04

I use my PC for emails/downloading music/surfing the web but mainly gaming. I would like a 512 MB card but a 256 MB would do I guess I’m looking to spend under £50. Now I know the card has to be AGP (I don’t have a PCI Express slot just 3 PCI and I’ve read AGP is better than PCI) does it matter if it’s a 4x or a 8x and what is better an AGP (ATI) or a AGP (Nvidia). The main thing that is getting me is all these MHz I’m I right in thinking that the higher the MHz the more power the card consumes, I have read in some posts about people needing a new Power Supply I would really like to not have to do that.

If anyone can tell exactly what I should be looking for or even suggest some cards then Thanks.

High end AGP cards are power hungry & the AGP slot itself doesn't provide enough juice. The majority of gaming AGP cards require a direct plug-in to the PSU to supplement it's power needs, that means that the PSU must be up to the task or it will have to be upgraded too.

8X AGP cards are backwards compatible with 4X AGP slots, so 8X is what you should be looking for. Try to get a card that uses GDDR3 memory. Figure about $75-100 for a decent gaming card & another $50-100 for a PSU (if necessary).

If you wanna spend more, there's always something like this:

Jam first thanks for responding I have looked at both the cards that you have supplied links to but I live in the UK and the cost would be more for me due to P&P and the difference bewteen the $ and the £. So I have looked for those cards on British sites but could not find them but did find a 512MB that is similar and in my price range to the one you found. I have found some cards that are in my price range and would like your opinion on them if thats ok.

Most of the cards you listed are low end garbage, with the exception of the Radeon X1650Pro & even that's not great because of the DDR2 memory. Stay away from Turbocache, Hypermemory or cards that use 64-bit memory. GDDR3 is better than GDDR2 or DDR2 memory.

How about this:

That cards a bit out of my price range, I've noticed that you have shown me 3 Sapphire cards what do you think of this one www.amazon.co.uk (Sapphire RADEON HD 2400PRO - Graphics adapter - Radeon HD 2400PRO - AGP 8x - 256 MB DDR II - Digital Visual Interface (DVI) - HDTV out - lite retail) or these www.play.com (Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro / AGP / 512MB / Graphics Card) or (Sapphire Radeon HD 2600Pro / 512MB / AGP / Graphics Card)

Now I really would like to know this would I need to get a new power supply as well or not if I do would this do www.amazon.co.uk (Trust Pw-5110 370W Psu) I have 230w at moment. Now you say to stay away from cards with 64-bit but would a DDR2 128-bit card be fine I mean as long as it will allow me to play CallofDuty4 and other high tech modern day games does it matter thats it's a DDR2 and not a GDDR3? Thanks for your help so far Jam

Don't know if anyone will read this or not but here goes.

I have looked at some graphics cards that require a floppy drive power cable, I don’t use my floppy drive anymore would I be able to disable that and just remove the power cable so I can use it in a new graphics card or would I have to uninstall the drivers for it? I have seen a cable that plugs into a molex and would then give me another molex connector and a floppy connector would it be easier to get that cable?

I have also seen some graphics cards that use a molex connector I only have one molex connector free. I have seen a cable that plugs into a molex connector and would then give me 2 free molex connectors here is some of the description from the website (It converts one single power supply connection into a double connection. Male to 2 females) is that safe to do?

Oh why do modern cards need a power cable.

Ok I have gotten a new graphics card well it's second hand but it's new to me and my PC, what I would like to know is do I need to uninstall the drivers/software for my old card first before I install the new one?

Thanks to whoever responds.
