Graphics Card Upgrade

I have an old graphics card in an old machine, running ATI RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2X, have downloaded the latest driver but is considered a legacy product so no further drivers expected. This means that many software products don't work on my machine, most recently a language course which requires Quicktime. If I try and load Quicktime it causes an error in Kernel32.dll which is why I believe a new graphics card is required. But I am concerned that just buying a new card might not be a good idea because of compatibility with other components such as sound and video and motherboard. Any suggestions as best way to approach this without spending too much? Otherwise would be wiser to buy new computer which can't afford at present.
