Comment:

I have an RADEON 9600 XT (128 MB) AGP card and the fan is whining and slowing. Is the fan necessary? Should I install a PCI expansion fan under it in the next PCI slot if I disconnect the video card fan? I have a case fan already.

TIA

I would recommend replacing the fan immediately as well as removing anything from the PCI slot adjacent to the graphics card to give it better air flow. I could be mistaken but unlike most CPUs and motherboards that have thermal overload cutouts to prevent damage, I have not heard of such a feature on a graphics card.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Fans are cheap and usually very easy to replace.

What you could do is carefully remove the fan, then carefully peel back the seal that hides the bearing...add a drop or two of oil to the bearing, then rotate the fan back & forth with your fingers to work the oil in. Seal it up & reinstall it. That should hold you over until you find a replacement.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the bearing lube job. I googled the aftermarket fan products. Very few for ATI 9600XT, but worth a try. The AGP slot is fairly isolated below the CPU and above the nearest PCI slot by two inches. Just two other expansion cards.
