I have dialup, does a good modem make a difference, this one I paid 29.00 at comp usa, I have seen more expensive ones. I also have msn and they do not recognise v92 yet as a lot of them don't, so I am asking because I am having problems with this one its 2 years old, and thinking of replacing it and would like to know if there is a good modem or if it makes a difference.

Without knowing exactly what kind of problem you are having, we are kinda at a loss on how to advise.

the best modem i've used in my 10 years on the net, is the u.s.robotics external modem,
durable and fast. they are costly tho, about 100.00

I would agree with uppercrust. I have a 3Comm/USR 56K Professional Message Modem that consistently gets a slightly faster connection than other modems I have used and they are reliable. In fact I would never recommend any one use anything but an external modem. Internal modems are more trouble than they are worth.
With ADLS mine is largely redundant now but is still serves as an excellent of-line answering machine and for the occasional Fax.But like he says, they are a bit more expensive. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Thanks for the tips, I think I will check external modems out. What has happened is there was a big rain storm here for days and it messed up my phone lines and inside alarm system and somehow messed up my modem, lost phone for 3 days today is the first day I have been able to connect and its messed up a couple of things I should have not got on the internet till phone was working all the time, and the darn phone company said they could not come out till today and guess what they never showed up...thanks Verison.

You should be able to get a decent PCI v92 modem for next to nothing that will perform quite well. But like ham30 said, without knowing the make/model of your current modem & what your porblem is, it's hard to give advice. It could simply be a setting, a need to update your modem driver, or infection, or spyware, etc. Hold on to your money for right now...post back with your specs & the specifics about your problem, & see if it can't be fixed

It is a 56K PCI Internal Data/Fax Modem V.92 P/N 289204 FS-LEC-PCtel...HSP 56, driver version 8.011.3, pretty sure it is the most current driver and I have no virus or spyware, check it constantly with all the programs used here, I am not sure if the connection outside to the incomming house did not get drenched with this recent storm, this house is old I am sure I need to run a new telephone line into house but don't want to pay the 120 dollars to phone company to do it then find out that the line to the house is old and get no better connection, I have a good isp never had the trouble getting connected that I have at this house, guess it just may be the lines here.

I'd say if your modem is still working then buying another is not going to solve it. Modems most of the time either work or don't. If they don't work right it's usually driver related.
Verizon where I am is responsible for lines to point of connection to the house. This may be the problem if you have a burried line to your house. Any connection from there box that leaves into your house is your responsibility unless you pay extra for in home service. If you had enough water to flood your crawlspace "if you have one" a problem could be there.
You could drag your comptuer to someone else's house and try internet there. Kinda a pain but cheapest test.
