Getting data from old laptop drive

Hello. A client of mine has a Gateway Solo 1400 laptop where the hard drive failed. He purchased and installed a new one. He wants to know how he could try and retrieve the data from the old drive. Assuming that the old drive could be read (it's not booting), how could I retrieve data for him? The old drive is an IBM model ic25N010ATDA04-0. The OS is XP Home. Unlike a tower, there isn't the normal cable with two connectors that I can plug the old drive in as a slave. And as I understand the connector is an ATA-5 type, so I couldn't attach it as a hard drive in a tower. Is there anything I can do by using a bootable floppy? If the CD drive is removable, would I be able to install the old drive there to access it as a second drive? Any help with this would be most appreciated.
