Can someone tell me if my AGP 4x MX/MX400 card will work in an Asus motherboard. This board has an 8x AGP slot 3.0.

Usually AGP is backward compatible one level, so a 4X card it will work in an 8X slot but run at 4X. There are a few exception to that rule and your Motherboard is one of them.

The manual states 1.5V cards only, which is AGP 8X.

i do not normally like to say that a previous answer is wrong, but on this occasion I will. If the manual says it will take a 1.5volt card only - which is common on modern motherboards, it will take 4x or 8x. 4x is 1.5 volts, 2x is 3.3 volts.
Geforce2 mx/mx400 IS compatible in an agp slot that says 1.5 volt cards only.

That is OK cliffpage, that was my mistake. I was thinking that AGP 3, 2, 1, were all different voltages. Manual states 1 x 8X AGP (1.5v only).

Just looked it up. I see why I got confused. 8X AGP runs at 0.8V.

Thanks for that as I don't want to blow anything up! I realise that it will run slower.....

Much better method than trying and then asking after things get fried.

mill, although you say you realise it will run slower, 8x is twice speed of 4x 'in theory', in practice there are so many other bits which stop 8x achieving the theoretical speed, eg. there are 4x and 8x versions of geforce 4 mx440 cards, if both were tested in a 8x mobo you would unlikely notice the difference, likewise if you used an 8x card at 8x speed and then reduced the speed to 4x in the BIOS/setup, again you would unlikely spot the difference.
