Gateway PSU

My brother has a Gateway 450hz computer (about 4 years old), and he wants to upgrade his video card to play sims. The new video cards require a psu of 300-350 amps. Gateway, with their proprietary systems, do not offer the needed psu. Short of buying a new computer, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Richard

My brother had a Gateway PII 450 in a full tower with the cooling fan on the underside of the PSU with a duct and no fan on the CPU. Fortunately that CPU runs cool so as long as you replace the PSU with one that draws air from its underside you should be OK without the plastic shroud.PSUs that I know draw air from underside are 300W Sparkle or all Enermax 350W upwards. When I upgraded his machine to a 1Gig Athlon I rebuilt his motherboard into a low profile desktop with a 250W psu where the fan was on the side of the PSU sucking air over the PSU heatsink and it works fine.
