Gateway M6882-H computer screen not working

Specs: Windows Vista, 3
My mothers Gateway laptop has suddenly developed an issue with the screen resolution. From bios to operating system, the screen is squished to the top left, and the pixels not being used at the bottom are being stretched from above. I've already ruled out it being an issue with the resolution, which is backed up by the fact that it is messed up even before anything is loaded from the HDD. I've also done a system restore among other things and nothing has worked. The only thing I can think of is a loose cable from the screen or something but I want another opinion before I tear the laptop apart to check.
There's a picture I took of the desktop, I'm sure I wasn't very clear in explaining how it looked, but as you can see, the windows button in the bottom left is stretching down, and there is a large black area to the right.

I'm no expert on this issue, but since you have not gotten any responses my advice would be to plug it in a monitor (VGA) and see what you get... experiment you know; that's what I would've done.

If you get the same thing find and use the Menu button (which is in specific locations depending on brand). Once you find it select geometry and you will be able to stretch and specify how the screen fits. Try and see if you can use this on your laptop screen.

I don't know if it'll work, but it won't hurt to try right? "/ Post back with the results, and try to include more of your systems information to make the problem easier to solve.

That's actually one of the other things I tried and it was a fix somewhat. The image looks fine on an external monitor, so I've just been using one with it lately. Not sure what other information to include. It's a Gateway M6882-H with Windows 7 now on it (I formatted the hard drive and put Win7 on it just for the hell of it), 3Gb of ram, Intel Centrino processor, 15.6", integrated graphics, nothing special really. It was bought in March of 2009. I ended up taking the screen apart and most of the top cover off to take a look at all of the connections. I reset all of the monitor connections and made sure they were tight, as well as took a quick look at what I could see of the motherboard but noticed nothing unusual. The only thing I noticed was that the larger of the 2 chords going from the motherboard to the monitor was bunched up a little and pinching at the hinge of the laptop. I re-positioned it so it wasn't being pinched but no improvement. I also made sure all of my display drivers were up to date and they were. So I think maybe one of the chords just needs to be replaced on the inside, because the connections themselves are fine.
