I have a extra computer (Gateway ASTRO 400) that rarely was used and has been in storage. Brought it out the other day to hook it up, but the computer won't start. Nothing will boot up when I hit the power button. The only thing that the computer does is when I plug in the powercord it makes that pop/crackle sound.
The casing was taken off to look inside, but there is nothing that was unplugged or broken off.
Don't know what the problem could be and would appreciate any help.

Take it from a X-gateway employee, it aint worth it. The astro only has 4 things to replace, the HDD, the ram, the WHOLE internal board, and the CRT. And it doesn't sound like a HDD or ram. The only place to fix it is at gateway if RPL of HDD & ram don't don't fix it.
FYI be careful mucking about inside the CRT will hold about 15,000 volts.

The most likely problem is the battery on the motherboard. When a computer sits for a long time the batteries sometimes die. You can pick one up just about anywhere.

The other thing it could be is the PSU (Power Supply) if nothing is happening when the start button is pushed.

Pop/crackle sounds like a power supply problem to me.`Might' be caused by a dust buildup.

Well when I took the casing off I took a can of compressed air to it to get rid of the dust. I might check the battery on the motherboard, but don't really want to put too much time into it. Thanks for all the help.
