OS: Win XP Pro
CPU/Ram: P4 2.26 / 512
Comment:

I have inherited my son's Scaleo 600 - P4 2.26 GHz, 512 MB PC2100 RAM. It has a Chaintech GA-8STXC motherboard (Rev 1.0). I have the chance of a P4 2.66GHz CPU from a 'redundant' Fujitsu Scenic office PC. Can I fit this CPU to the GA-8STXC? (assuming that the 'format' of the CPUs is the same, of course)

Going from 2.26mhz to 2.66mhz isn't worth the bother, especially when you figure in the possibility of causing a problem making the change.

I'm confused about that board. Isn't it a Gigabyte? I dont think its a normal retail board. Its specially tailored for Fujitsu. It may not like changes. However as long as the socket type (or 'format' as you put it) is the same, ie socket 478 I think you'll be alright. You can tell just by looking at the boards if they are the same. Socket 775 looks quite different. From the 0.06GHz both are Celeron D's?. I would do it cos I like tinkering but there is a risk of complications.

How can you possibly say that when he is getting it for free?

houston1981, I can say that because it will not make any noticeable improvement in his system. That's less than a 1% increase in CPU speed, and a lot less in overall system performance.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone!

Yes, it is a Gigabyte board but I couldn't find any relevant information on their web site - or on Fujitsu's.

Both the 2.26 and 2.66 'chips' are listed as being P4s.

From Ham30's comments, I can see that the risks exceed the benefits - especially as I have never replaced a processor before. I guess I was caught up in the 'biggest is best' syndrome.

That mainboard is a Gigabyte and not a Chaintech. It is specially designed for Fujitu Siemens and it's drivers can be found on www.fujitsu-siemens.com and not on any gigabyte's website. The upgrade works well infact the one I have is fitted with an Intel 2.8Ghz pc533, socket 478. Well there's isn't much of an increase but if this cpu is sitting on a bench, i'd rather use.. remember every little % counts for performance.
