Hi, i've tried the search, but couldn't find what i need to know.
I have a case that has 2 USB ports on the front, i have the Asus A7N8X-X mobo, it gives me 4 rear USB ports and there is also a header for another add on rear mounted plate for 2 further ports.
My question is, can i hook up my front mounted ports to the mobo via the header??
If so could someone explain it to me??Many thanks in advance
Alan..

Look in your motherboard manual for the pin assignments & just match them to the wires for the front ports...each plug should be labelled...

Thanks for the reply, however, in the mobo manual it says attach a 2 port USB connector set to the header.
The header is arranged with a series of pins looking up, ie, 5 along the top and 4 along the bottom.
They are marked like this
USB+5, USB P6-, USB P6+, GND, NC
USB+5, USB P5-, USB P5+, GNDThe case wires are as follows:-
(1)Ground (black)
(1) +5V (Red)
(1) +D (Green)
(1) -D (Yellow)
(2) Ground (Black)
(2) +5V (Red)
(2) +D (Blue)
(2) -D (White)So my question is, can i attach the case wires to make the front USB ports work, if yes does anyone know the correct sequence i should use to attach the wires.
Or can i only install a 2 port header to the pins for a rear mounted bracket.I'd really like to get the front ports to work.
Thanks
Alan..

In addition to the USB ports that come pre-mounted on your mainboard, when you got your case there should be four wire leads coming from the FRONT PANEL where your USB front ports are located. Those wires should be terminated on each end with tiny black (usually)male spade plug with USB(number)on it. Just plug them into the corresponding USB# female receptacle on your mainboard.
Now, if your case did NOT come with those leads, what they gave you was the empty USB sockets, and you must purchase a USB port to screw in. It will have the leads I just mentioned.
Hope I answered your question.

Thanks for the reply, my case did indeed come with wires attached to it as i described above, the little spade plugs you mention are there and are marked as above.
Its how i attach them to the mainboard, if at all possible??
Thanks
Alan

Okay, now it all depends on your mainboard. If your mobo supports 4 or 6 active USB ports you are in good shape. Usually on the box it came in it specifies how many USB ports it contains, sometimes even telling you how many are integrated and active on the board, and how many are ported. Also definitely consult your manual.
As I said above; there are a series of tiny sockets in a row, the same size as your hdled, spkr, etc. sockets. On my Shuttle AK39N board the USBs are in the same row as all the others. On the AN35N board the USB sockets are set off by themselves, so it may vary depending on the engineering of your board. They will be labeled, USB3, USB4, USB5, etc. Sometimes it takes some digging to find them, but your manual will tell you. If you don't have a manual, most manufacturers have them in Acrobat format on the website for downloading/reading online.

Hi, thanks for all the help, i have now resolved the issue, i was getting confused with the P5 & P6 and the D lettering, the 5 & 6 were simply the mobo's way of seperating the two connectors.
By mating the P5- to D- and the P5+ to the D+ and the same for the P6 my USB's now work perfectlyAlan..
