My sons computer is a emachine 620 which has suffered a power spike which in turn blew his PSU and Mobo. I have changed his PSU but i'm having problems getting a replacement Mobo. My question is dose anybody know what Mobo would replace his original board. His original board is a Trigem Alaska3 Thanks in anticipation IPP.

If lightning damaged the PSU and the MOBO, there may be other components that have been damaged. You can probably replace the MOBO with another one that will support an Athlon 1800+ and 1GB of the RAM that you have but the repair costs are going to add up quickly and, unless your new hardware configuration is identical or close to the original, your WIN XP OS may not function.

Technology has improved a great deal since this computer was "state of the art" and prices have come down dramatically.

You may be better off buying a new computer. If the HDD was not damaged, you could slave it in the new computer and access its files.

Thanks Badboy but the Athlon 1800+ CPU is what is in my Computer and not in my son's. My son's is a Intel 2.70Ghz Celeron processer. I agree, Badboy, computers have come down in price, i just thought if i could fix it for him myself, without paying too much for the parts i would give it ago. Other parts could well be damaged that's a chance i'm willing to take, if it still don't work after i have replaced the Mobo i will call it a day and do what you have suggested and buy another computer and us his HD as a slave, if it isn't damaged that is.
Thanks to you too Squirrel. The PSU had blown in my sons Emachine and the Mobo was damaged, the report i had done on it said so. Thanks again Badboy and Squirrel..

Hi there,

My mate's had a similar problem with his. His motherboard is an AL845GE (made by emachines I think), and he's got an emachines 620.

Any chance you could tell me what happened to yours? His just turned itself off and rebooted, but when it rebooted the power light just flashed, it didn't beep or anything and nothing else happened. That's all it does now, it's just cabbaged.

Cheers,

Stu

All this happened while we were away on hols. My son came back to this problem. The computer was dead no lights nothing. He took it to a repairer and he told my son that the PSU was blown and the mobo too. I have replaced the PSU, now the lights on the front panel come on and the fan on the mobo comes on too, but the computer dosen't post, in fact it don't do nowt..
