Hey guys,

At work we had a problem transferring someone's old hard drive data to the new drive. I plugged it in, plugged the hard drive into the usb to (SCSI?) converter and powered up the laptop. I think somehow the hard drive got shorted? or just plain messed up because it no longer spun.

We grabbed an old hard drive of the same model and switched out the pieces and it would spin but the hard drive still wasn't being read.

The first error was "Operating System not found"

Do you guys know of any way we can fix this without paying some unfortunate amount to a data recovery company?

if you can find the exact same hdd down to the controller bd version you may have a chance at getting the hdd to spin again

i would try a little break-fix troubleshooting by plugging the hdd into another pc or hook it up to a external case to see if it could be somthing else other that the hdd

What parts did you switch? Hopefully you didn't open the case.

My manager did the work and I think he knows what hes doing, I believe he just transferred the disc over and now its clicking when we put it in another computer as a secondary hard drive but not being detected.

Reading more about it, seems our last option is to put it in the freezer and if that doesnt work we send it to expensive professionals who have the clean environment to work in and get it repaired.
