Frequent restarting

Amd athlon / 64 x2 dual core processor...
January 7, 2010 at 14:27:53
Specs: Windows Vista
If I'm only running msn and firefox(the most I can do), my pc stays running for up to 5 hours before restarting suddenly. If I open anything other than msn/firefox, or even run a browser game, my pc restarts within 1-60mins.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it started after my sister turned my pc off at the wall(something I don't do)
My dad tried to see if it was the gfx by putting my brother's old, fried gaming gfx card in, and it accelerated the rebooting to every 30sec-2mins. Sometimes it didn't even load the desktop. So, I took it out and it's back to the afore mentioned.

Not sure I fully understand the entire situation. You computer shuts down I understand. I don't understand if the fried graphics card testing was done and then this problem started or not.

At any rate overheating could cause the restarts as well as other causes.

Go to Control panel> System> Advanced> Startup and recovery settings. Untick Automatically restart. Next restart should show some errors.

the fried graphics card was 2-3 weeks after the problem started. my dad put it in to test it.
and i've already done what you said, i did it when it started and it hasn't made a difference.

What messages, if any, did you see upon restart?

Have you checked the system temperatures? You could monitor them in real time using something like speedfan.

no messages, screen just goes black and pc restarts like when you press the restart button on the pc, instead of in windows.

i've checked the temperatures. when running msn and firefox, it varies from 30°c-55°c, constantly changing from numbers between 30 and 55 so i'm not sure for definate with speedfan.
