Subject: Freezing. Could it be RAM? OS: Windows XP Pro CPU/Ram: Athlon 1800XP / 512 MB PC
|
Comment: Hi. I've been having problems with my computer freezing and restarting. It usually happens the first time I turn it on after it's been off for awhile. It usually freezes and restarts within like 5 minutes of turning it on. After restarting it usually works just fine after that. I dont know what it could possibly be, but I'm kind of starting to suspect the RAM in my system. I have 2 identical sticks of 256 MB Samsung PC 133 RAM. Here are the other specs for my system: AMD Athlon 1800XP K7SEM mobo MSI Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128 MB DDR 60 GB Western Digital 7200 RPM HD It's weird because although I am suspecting the extra RAM since it's the most recent addition to my system, I didnt start having the problem until like a month after I put it in. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? Is Samsung a bad brand for RAM? Please respond and let me know what you think.

Reply: (edit)when did you add that GF4 4200TI? sometimes the k7sem will lock up with agp video cards and require the agp bus speed to be lowered. if its been fine for a few months how it is, it could be that the psu is slowly dying..thats happened to mine a few times, the components draw the most current when the pc is first turned on when the drives spin up etc so that could well be the problem.

Reply: (edit)Im having the same problem, only my computer wont get dos or anything at the very beginning anymore. It keeps a blank screen and tries to restart a few times, then shuts off.

Reply: (edit)I tried starting the computer up today after work and it froze. I took one of the sticks of RAM out and tried it again, and it froze again. I took the other stick of RAM out and put the first one back in and it started up normally. It didnt ALWAYS freeze before, so it could be a fluke, but for now I'm just gonna run with the one 256MB stick of RAM. I'll post up here again if it freezes again. Hey Jokester, post your system specs up here so we can see if they are similar to mine in any way.

Reply: (edit)Ok. It's not the RAM. I keep having the same problem no matter what configuration I use. I tried all possible configurations and it keeps freezing. It doesnt freeze all the time though. If it doesnt freeze within like the first 5 minutes then it wont freeze at all. Does anyone know what this could be?
