Freezing before desktop appears

We have a number of identical P3 IBM 300PL desktops in our schools running Windows 98, all installed off the same ghost image. One of the units has developed a strange fault which I can't resolve. It has suddenly started freezing just before the desktop appears. I tried reinstalling Win98 from scratch but it still freezes at the same point. I also installed Win 2000 and - guess what - it freezes just after logging in and before the desktop appears, so it seems to be hardware related and not OS. But the machne ran for 6 months without a problem and nothing has been changed on the hardware front. Any ideas? Thanks Andy

Obviously hardware related, not software. Could be overheating. Check the CPU cooling fan...it may have burned out or may be totally clogged with dust
Hellz Yea!

Those models don't have fans, just heatsinks. Try removing and reseating the processor and RAM modeules. See if that helps.

Thanks. I have tried changing everything - RAM, processor, hard drive. No joy, it still freezes (in Win98) before the desktop appears.
But... I reset the CMOS and now it freezes a bit earlier, while the splash screen is showing. Actually, it doesn't freeze as the bar at the bottom is still mving left to right, but Windows just never finishes loading.
