Freezes only on cold boot, not warm

PC did this with both ME and XP loaded.
Upon initial boot, the computer freezes early into the Windows screen. Force another boot, it gets a little farther. This goes on 4-5 times until the computer is finally booted.
If left on, the computer will restart with no problem. If the computer is off for only 10 minutes or so, it starts with no problem. It is like a car that doesn't like cold weather. I am not sure where to begin to start troubleshooting the problem. All help is appreciated.

if you have another known-working hard drive, install XP on it and try again. Perhaps the actuator arms or motor inside your drive are tempramental, just like a car. (?)

another idea to try is go to your hard drive mfg's website and download a diagnostics program, if available. Run it and see if it comes back with any problems.

You have a "cold boot" problem. I'd do a search on "cold boot moboxyz" on a forum for your motherboard such as at amdmb.com. It could also be the power supply.
