SATA 2 300MB/s is out NOW...and it is great..so don't build a new system without it. I just built a comp and then found out about this...SUCKKKKKKKKKK. Oh well..at least i could save some money hehe.

A good mainboard that support SATA2 now is Abit AL8.

And why would that be necessary when even the newest drives can't even sustain 100MB/s transfer rates??? Hard drives have been one of the biggest bottlenecks in computing performance for years.

It's like using gigabit to network your home, but the only available technology for connecting to the internet is dial-up.

It is the hard drives with SATA2 run at 300MB/s. 8)

Sorry Nan, I think you have fallen victim to deceptive marketing.

The SATA interface is capable of speeds up to 300MBs. However there are not many drives that actually use more than ATA100 can cater for. If you want to use all of the bandwidth available on SATA2, you'll need a 30,000 RPM drive!

Is it really so? I thought if the interface is able to carry out that much then the hard drive should be able to read and write proportionally.

I hope you are right so i can be happy with my current "old" system.

I'm glad your happy to hear that. I was afraid I might have been talking to someone who had just spent a lot of money to have the latest and greatest and expected it to make a difference.

For years it was the interface that was a bottle neck. Drive manufacturers kept designing drives which required greater bandwidth. ATA133 is about the limit which parrallel can carry. This is why they changed to serial (with serial you don't have to worry about bits arriving out of sync). Now with ATA2, drive manufacturers have plenty of bandwidth to use if they come up with a more efficient design.
