Specs: Windows XP, P4
Get the above message when turn on machine. Keeps recycling that message. Machine will not start. Booted machine from a:\ with an old 1.44 floppy Windows 95. Got to the prompt. Tried to cd to c:\, but would not recognize the c: Cannot use diagnostic programs because cannot boot up Windows XP, the normal OS on this system. My next step is to purchase a new HD and try to start over. What do you think?

Which message?

Booting with a Win9x floppy will not allow you to access an NTFS drive only FAT/FAT32 drives can be accessed this way.

Your hard drive is probably formatted with NTFS.

Have you not got an XP CD?

You can download and burn Ultimate Boot CD from here:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Run the boot CD and run the diagnostics available on it.

hey mavis007 have you got a crystal ball? I did not see that error message anywhere.

That would suggest that the hard disk is NOT being detected in BIOS and the system is then trying to boot of the network when there probably isn't one.

Go into your BIOS and check if the HDD is being detected or not.

If it is not being detected then there may be a problem with your hard drive.
