Johnoh, you asked about my circuit board and display adapter so you could advise me on which pc kit to buy so I won't have to rebuy sound card, video card, modem or memory. Circuit board = 693-596B-977, bus clock=133 megahertz, bios=Award software International, Inc. 4.51, PG=04/20/00
Display adapter=S3 ViRGE DX/GX
I think my memory is SDRAMM - one PC133 128MB and one PC100 128MB
Thanks

If your vid card goes in a pci slot, it work on any new motherboard.

If your vid card goes in an agp slot, it will not work on most new motherboards since they are made for agp 4x and 8x which supplies less voltage than your card needs. So either go with on-board video on the new board, or make sure it is an agp 2x/4x board.

Your memory will work on any board that takes just sdram or both ddr & sdram. I am not sure what to recommend though. I have had great luck with ecs k7s5a boards running ddr memory, but have heard of people having problems with that board when using sdram. The problem here is you want to get a system that has been tested and that means you are best off buying new memory so they can test it. The most common thing that goes wrong with cheap systems is that you have lock ups due to the motherboard and memory not working together.

If you are okay paying for new ddr memory then I'd go here

and get the k7s5a special they have advertised on pricewatch.com, an amd xp2000+ for about $100.

Be aware that you will also need to transfer your hard drive, cd drive and floppy drive to the new system as well as the items you mentioned.

Since you have two sticks of memory you might try running with only one at a time because if memory was your problem you can solve this cheaply by replacing a stick. There is a decent amount of work involved in transferring to a bare bones system.
