What do you mean? When you access the drive do you see all the files on the desktop? Or are you just seeing them when browsing the drive but they are icons instead of text?

What kind of USB are we talking about here? Using the correct names for hardware simplifies things. I am guessing you mean a flash drive, but could be an external hard drive or possibly a memory card.

Sorry I mean my flash drive. The icons are all there but when I click to open and view the folders I get the message: "The item 'pwhoez.scr' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved,so this shortcut will no longer work properly."
And when I scan the flash drive the scan shows all the files present.
What should I do to view them?

I don't know what the shortcut is pointing to. Did you have a program on the flash drive and remove it? the .scr file extension can refer to many different types of files. Look at the link below for further information on that topic.

When you click on any of the files, do they open?

If you right click on any of the files on the flash drive and choose properties. Look at the Opens with to see if it is correct.

It doesn't give me that option but open file location and that gives me the same message about the shortcut.

Some things to try.

When in Computer right click on the drive and choose to scan with Microsoft Security Essentials.

When in Computer right click on the drive and choose properties> tools> error-checking> check now.

Download and run Ccleaner Slim using the cleaner and registry modules. Get Ccleaner Slim at the link below.

Maybe it's due to malware or some glitch with windows, but often the attributes of the files are changed to make them hidden. Check # 7 here:

and my # 15 there for more syntax details.

I've had this issue before. It is the result of a virus. You will usually see the .exe virus on the pen drive. Its relatively easy to save your files.

The way the virus works is to create a shortcut in the name of your files and then point the target to an .exe application which is the virus.

To ensure you don't spread the, do a virus check with an updated virus checker AVG or AVAST can find it.

To recover your files go to start>run> type CMD and hit enter,

The command console should have appeared, type the following replacing the drive letter with the one assigned to your usb. e.g. E:\ (you can find this by going to my computer and seeing which drive it is using)

attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*

This makes all files visible since the virus hides the real files. Save them to a trusted area and then delete all the shortcuts and the clean the usb. Don't copy any shortcuts onto your system.
