HI
can anyone tell me if there are different types of ribbons for floppy disks.
I removed 1 from old computer..but if wont fit into my other one...
thankstonino

Floppy disk cables haven't changed for the last twenty years. The only change is when 3.5 inch drives appeared they went from edge connectors to IDE type connectors but that was over ten years ago.
You can tell a floppy cable as it is not as wide as an IDE cable and a bunch of wires at one end are separated and twisted.
In what way won't it fit:

All floppy cables have the same number of wires--34--although not all are necessary for data transfer. Sometimes one of the holes in the plastic connector will be filled in. Ideally that's so you don't put the cable on backwards. But not all floppy drives have a missing pin to accomodate the filled in plug. If that's the problem you're having then you need to get a cable where all 34 holes are open.
If you're dealing with a really old slide-on/edge cable as StuartS mentioned well, again, you need to get another cable.

You may have a cable for a ZIP/floppy drive, which connected to the IDE controller ports. I never owned one so I am not sure about the drive end configuration.

thanks guys for answering.
it wont fit on the motherboard. It seems that on the motherboard there are 2 pins then 1 missing then the rest are there. On my Other computer, there is 1 pin, then 1 missing and then the rest of the pins.Do You think that the people that assembled the motherboard made a mistake..By the way,the other part of the ribbon fits on the floppy..the motherboard is an Asus Mel-M. I noticed that when my brother gave me the machine...the ribbon was missing, so i took the ribbon from an older machine and tried to install when I noticed the difference...
thanks again....tonino

Yeah, I've seen those too so it's no mistake. As I recall I even had a hard time finding a drive that would work with those because most are missing the second-from-the-end pin (instead of the third) and the drive's missing pin would have to match. At this point the best you could probably do is get a cable with no blocked holes since those will fit even if the motherboard or drive pin is missing. Then see if the drive is useable.
In what US state or country do you live? I've got a few boxes full of old cables. I could probably send one if you can't find any there.

thanks DAVEINCAPS.
