Hey . I need some advice. I am fixing a Floppy Drive on a old computer. But heres the problem, im not sure if its the floppy or the driver of the floppy. Here are the main points. The Floppy light does not go on. In Windows it stats that the floppy drive is using a dos-mode driver which may reduce performance. Reinstalling drivers does not fix the problem. Now is the floppy broken or is it a driver problem?. And yes i checked all the cables so they are connected. Thanks for the help.
Bye

Check the cable that's connected to the floppy.
You have to use the connector with the twisted wires. And check the position of pin1.
On some floppys pin1 is on the other side so the red wire on the cable has to face in the other direction than that of the harddrive.

Had the same problem lately and it cost me nearly an hour to find the reason why the computer wouldn't even boot!

Pin1 should be marked at the unterside of the floppy!

Does the floppy work at boot? Hang a boot disk in it and see what happens. BIOS should be set to boot from floppy first.

If it's a ms-dos compatibility mode issue a fdisk /mbr may be in order.

Usually if the cable is backward the floppy light will light and stay lit.

When you say 'fixing' are you attempting to repair a failed fdd, or install?

The pc is not that old if it supports w98.

Suggestions:-

check the bios to see that the fdd is correctly set up for the type of drive (and enabled if applicable).

try the fdd in another pc, where it is known its fdd works.

you advise the led does not come on. This could be a faulty interface cable, so maybe try the cable elsewhere. If one end of the cable is the wrong way around the led is on constantly, but no damage is done.

Good luck - keep us posted.

Thanks for the responses. I will get on it tomorrow asap when i find time. I will double check the cables. This is a Hp computer, so if u know what i mean i rather not have to take out the floppy out unless there is no other choice. I would have to take out 5 other things with it. Heres some answers to your questions. The light does not go on at all. The computer is set to boot first from the floppy but everytime it skips it and boots from another option. By Repairing i mean, Trying to figure out whats wrong with it. A family member asked me to take a look at their computer and u never know what they do with those computers lol, for they told me when they reformatted their computer the floppy stopped working. I did not try the boot disk yet because i had no disk present before but i will test it tomorrow.
Once again i thank you for taking your time and giving me some good advice. Tomorrow i will inform of my progress.
