Comment:

Floppy drive is showing in My Computer and device manager, all drivers are current. Cable is connected properly as this has been checked many times. The activity light remains on continuously and the drive will not recognize any disks. I will get the message to insert a disk in the drive when I attempt to use the drive. BIOS has been checked and rechecked all is normal. This is a newly built system with all new parts.

Suggestions anyone?

:Y:;our cable is installed upside down on the drive. Reverse ASAP as that can burn out the floppy controller.

Be aware that just reversing the cable on one end may not do it. Unlike a hard disk cable, there are four ways of connecting a floppy cable and only one of them is right. You may need to reverse the cable at both ends.

I realize that may be the case in some instances, but each end of the cable is keyed as is the floppy controller on the mobo.

I would boot to safe mode and remove the floppy and controller (may be more than one instance, remove all) and reboot, letting XP reinstall.

Did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard?

Yes all chipset drivers have been installed. The system recognizes the drive and it shows up in My Computer.

Sounds like a defective drive. I would disable it. Had a similar thing happen once and it burned out the floppy controller.

That just screams that the cable is on backwards.
I'll take your word that it's not and suggest a new cable.
Good Luck

Oh, news to me considering the number of times I have gone throgh all four options til I found the one that worked. So why not?

You should be aware that a floppy disk cable has a twist in it that makes all the difference. There ARE four ways of connecting a floppy cable. Two plugs, two connectors, 2 x 2 = four. If you reverse both plugs on a floppy cable that is working, it will cease to work. Reverse one and it will cease to work. Try it and see.

Hey Stuart turns out you were absolutly correct, Me being a dumb a#$% had the floppy end in the controller and the controller end in the floppy.
Even though the cable is keyed my floppy drive would accept the cable either way. The controller is keyed so I had only one option I just chose the wrong end of the cable.

keep up the good advice man........

Thanks also to raincheck, we all need a good kick in the rear every now and then to remind us to stop for a minute and think a problem through.

Glad you got it sorted Spring2Kid.

The problem arises because some bright spark at IBM thought it would be a good idea to make all floppy drives cable select.

If they had stuck with jumper select, as they were originaly the same as hard disks, it would be considerably easier.

yes i have the chipset installed and its just the ram because my other 512 400 runs at 400 mhz (when nothing is overclocked and nothing is overclocked right now). I my "old" ram by itself to make sure just something in the bios wasnt messed up but it ran at 400 mhz. Can i make the two run at the same speed somehow because the store i got the ram from took me 3 hours to get there and back.
