I am looking at buying a flat screen.. My old 15" CRT reminds of the dark ages! My question is... What method is there to tell which is good and which isn't... My primary function is gaming... which I know CRT is better, but I handle losing all that desk space anymore. Thanks! P.S. I'm looking for value, I'm sure I cannot afford the best... So, If i'm out shopping can I look at the box and say... this definitly won't work... or will work, based on info provided by manufacturer.

Really, if your looking for value, your not gonna find a good LCD for gaming. You need to take that money you would spend on a 15 or 17in LCD and get a nice 17 or 19in CRT. There are a few good LCD's out now for gaming, but they cost a LOT! Sacrifice the desk space and get a CRT, you will be very very sorry if you get an LCD for gaming, especially first person shooters.

i agree get a decent crt forget lcd load of crap! the reason being its a liquid movement which is slow whereas a crt is a mechanical movement. if you ever upgrade to a high end card your lcd will not be able to keep up with it, my advice instead of spending silly money on a lcd get a good crt and spend that extra money on a bigger desk!

If you do insist on getting an LCD, get one thats native resolution is the same as what you notmally run.

My 15inch LCD is tons better than my old crap 15inch CRT, plays games perfect and I am very fussy when it comes to ghosting, modern LCD have very little ghosting it's not even noticeable, I have a high spec PC, and I play games like Call of Duty, Far Cry, HL2 Beta =), DOOM 3 Beta, Colin Mcrae Rally 4, Halo and lots more, I do lot's messing about on the net and this 15inch LCD is the best monitor I have ever had
and a 17inch CRT only has a 15-16inch viewable size, or a 19inch CRT only has a 17-18inch viewable size where as a 15inch LCD is a 15inch LCD or a 17inch LCD is a 17inch LCD, my 15inch LCD which I which I have had for almost 2 years has not lost any brightness, no dead pixels, it's been perfect
Get an LCD, CRT are old and outdated technology, CRT were invented in 1897, very old lol =)

I agree with Zero Cool, LCD technology is getting better and there are LCD's today with very minimal to no high-motion blurred effect and ghosting. If you want a good workout enroll in a gym rather than hauling your monitor.
You can easily find LCD's with pixel refresh level well below 20ms, which is not bad at all in comparison to CRT's. You need to look for one with low pixel pitch and high contast ratio too(500:1) and also a DVI connection (If you have a card supporting this).
Any of these top brands I recommend, NEC, Samsung and Viewsonic.

Hi Aaron.
I have a Hitachi CML 174.It is 17 inches.
It has a response time of 16 ms. The lower the response time, the less ghosting on moving objects in games.
I have seen no ghosting on any game I have played, including UT2003 and 2004, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Need For Speed Underground, Serious Sam, Halo etc.
It comes in Black or Ivory and costs around $400.00.
When I purchased it last year, it cost $600.00.
Take care,Linda
