i am installing a 40gb hard drive into an older computer. p166Mhz with 64mb Ram are there any programs to flash the western digital wd400 drive that i have so that it does not recognize as only 8.4Gb? I have downloaded the DLG program from western digital but i'm unsure as to the steps i need to take to get it working. If you can help that would be greatly appreciative.

You probably need to see if your motherboard manufacturer has a BIOS update to do that. It won't be from the hard drive manufacturer.

there is usually a flash update for hard drives to recognize also. if they are not being recognized by the motherboard cuz sometimes the motherboard's newest bios still doesnt support large drives
remember this is only a p 166Mhz so it may not have THAT new of a bios

There's no such thing as flashing a hard drive, you flash a bios, you format a hard drive. If your bios is the newest it can be and only showing 8 gigs, you're probably stuck with it. Your hard drive wouldn't need to be "updated". The best I can come up with is partitioning your 40 gig into individual sizes, 8 gigs each.

this information was what i got from the western digital website. If this is the case then i would like to know how to get my bios to recognize the drive as the full 40gb
this was taken from : http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=w-2gzxAg&p_lva=&p_faqid=54&p_created=1003440599&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQ5NyZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWhhcmQgZHJpdmUgbm90IGZ1bGx5IHJlY29nbml6aW5nJnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9NCZwX2NhdF9sdmwxPX5hbnl_JnBfY2F0X2x2bDI9fmFueX4mcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=
which is the official western digital website.

If the system BIOS is only recognizing 528MB, 2.1GB, 8.4GB, 32GB, 64GB of the hard drive, or something significantly less then the actual capacity of the hard drive, your motherboard may not support large capacity drives. If this is the case, you may need to use the Data Lifeguard Tools as part of your installation.

Note: If you will be or are using Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, do not use the alternate jumpers settings. In this case you may need to consider a BIOS upgrade or and add-in EIDE controller card to provide support for the drive.

if anyone can help me with a answer plz do so

You will need to use the drive overlay software on the West Dig disk.

Install EZ BIOS on the drive.
