I am building my first pc and i am still buying parts for it. i have a asus p4p800vm mobo and P4 2.6cGHz(800FSB,HT) still in box. asus website says i need to flash update bios if the version is earlier than 1007 for 2.6GHz cpu. i have version 1.05 printed on the board. is this an earlier version? what is flash bios updating and will my new computer work without it?

I believe 1.05 is the board revision...it has nothing to do with the BIOS. Unless the BIOS version is documeneted somewhere, you won't know what you have until you bootup for the 1st time & read it on the screen...

I would build your PC first. The CPU will work but at a slower speed than 2.6Ghz. Accrding to the ASus website this motherboard will support P4 CPU upto 3.2 Ghz. The latest update is 1010 so yours may well be out of date. 1.05 probably referes to the board revision number.
When you have got the computer up and running you will be able to determine better if the BIOS needs updating by looking at the motherboard sepcification at the bottom of the boot screen by the date if nothing else. The latet BIOS is dated 28/8/03.
I would get some further advice if you do decide to update the BIOS. Get it wrong and you could end up with a dead computer. There are two different update utilities avalable from Asus. Make sure you get the right one and read the instructions carefully. If there is anything you do not understand, ask. As I said, get it wrong and there is no going back
Good Luck
