I have recently purchased an Adata external hard drive and stored some music on it only to find that all files are lost the next morning. I did a file recovery and found the files however 40GB of my music is now in an unknown format and I cannoty open the files. I am running windows 7 on my Samsung laptop. Any ideas on how to recover my files in the original format and avoid this problem in the future?

I don't think that you'll be able to convert the files back to what they were but take a look at the programs that were on the drive when you bought it. The last external hard drive I bought has some backup software & some autorun file on it. I deleted them.

Hopefully, you still have your music in it's original place. I have mine on at least 2 drives. A single backup is not enough.

Are the files still named as they originally were? If only the file extension has changed you can try changing the extension back to the original. For example, mp3.

Another option would be to install a program that can read many different file types. Try infranview.
