Hi,
Ive built new comp, now trying to create partisons. Tried using the FDISK which was on the disk that came with my MotherBorard but it was FAT16 so particions were could only be 2MB. So Ive cretaed a CD boot disk from Win98 boot floppy as suggested on this board. The problem now is that I have Western Digital Caviar 7200rpm 120GB hard disk but FDISK sees only 48,93.93M which surely isnt 120GB!! in Bios its all set on auto and BIos recodnises hard disc as 120GB, Im formatting now to see what happens, do you have any ideas whats wrong???
Thanks in advance!

Why are you using fdisk? It was not designed for XP. If you are trying to install XP on one large 120gig partition, boot from the XP install CD. During the install process there is a partitioning as well as a formatting option.

FDISK will work fine.

RUn FDISK. Make sure you are saying YES to enable large disk support.

DELETE secondary partition, and all logical drives if you have any.

DELETE primary partition.

Then select display partition information.

Should be 100% empty. Then set it up the way you want.

If you call Microsoft and explain the situation and give them your key they will probably sell you a replacement CD. I got a replacement XP Pro CD from them for $30.

No need to use FDISK...it's archaic anyway. Do you know the make/model of your hard drive? If so, go to the manufacturer's website & download their software instead

True. But if all else fails, it works fine.

Ok, Ive figured out how do install winXP from my backup disk isntead of paying microsoft for a new disk!
BUT! thi smeans I have to run winxp boot CD first and then paticison and formatt, then insert winxp cd and installing manually.....when type FDISK off the winxp boot CD and chose large HD support IT still shows toatl memmory as 48,93.93M!!!! If I use Fat16 from win98 boot disk it shows avaliable space as 114GB which is fine but particions can only be 2 GB. In this fat 32 it shows avaliable space as 48,93.93M but particions can be anything you want...this idiocy doesnt make any sense!!!!

Cristina,

You're using the wrong FDISK. You cannot use the FDISK from Win 98 or 98SE; you must use FDISK from Win ME. Go to ....

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

and download "Windows Me OEM" exe file and execute to a floppy. That's what I use.

Good luck,
Sandor

Are there any jumper pins on the back of the drive? If it's a Western Digital, remove all jumper pins from the harddrive, have it be the only (master) drive in PC, and run FDISK. Do you get all 120 GB?

Let me try saying this again....

DON't USE FDISK! Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website & download their software!
