I have an IBM computer running ME and had to reinstall windows. But I don't like Windows ME so decided to format my hard drive and install W98. Unfortunately, the system would not accept W98, IBM said it was because the hard drive was partitioned for recovery, so I bought a new hard drive so that I could start from scratch. My problem is that the system will not recognise the FDISK command so I cannot partition the new hard drive. Any ideas anyone?

I'm not totally sure what you mean, but, I think you must put Fdisk on a floppy. Do this by going to your friends house, go to start, hit find, and type Fdisk.exe, right click it and hit send to floppy (provided you have a floppy in the drive). place it in your computer, then type in dos promt, a: then type fdisk.exe . then your done, you may also use the floppy that came with your hard drive, e-mail me if you still have problems, Hang In There Teresa!

Not only must you have fdisk but the floppy must be bootable.

Are you using a Windows ME or Windows 98 version of FDISK? You put in your startup disk and boot. At the A:> you enter FDISK. And what happens?

your best option is to go back into dos and go to the fdisk command again. make sure you only have one partition. if you have other partitions delete them and then reformat the drive then reboot the machine with the recovery cd in the drive , it should start to load and from what i can remember it asks you " what do you want to do ". are you using the recovery cd that you got with the machine. this site shows you how to use the fdisk command http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3JWNHN.html?lang=en_US&page=brand&brand=none&doctype=&subtype=Cat&up=unknownuser1030204120
